How AI Boyfriend Apps Work, Explained for Gay Men
An AI boyfriend app looks like a dating chat, but there is no man typing on the other side. This guide explains, in plain words, what actually happens when you message an AI boyfriend: how the character is built, how replies are written, what memory means, how photos and voice notes are made and what all of it costs. We use ChatRoger, a platform made for gay men with public prices, as the worked example, and mention Candy.ai and Joi where useful. We describe how these apps are built and priced, not how good the conversations feel: we have not tested chat quality on any platform. We may earn a commission if you subscribe through links on this site.

The short version: a character plus a language model
Every AI boyfriend chatbot is built from two layers. The first is the character: a name, a personality, a backstory, a way of talking and a look. That is what you choose when you pick a rugged daddy, a gym jock or a shy twink. The second is the engine: a large language model, a type of AI trained on huge amounts of text that predicts a plausible reply to whatever you write.
When you send a message, the app combines the character's description, the recent conversation and your new message, and asks the model to answer in that character's voice. The reply is generated fresh each time. Nobody wrote it in advance and nobody is reading along live to type it. That is why the same character can answer the same question differently twice, and why the tone depends heavily on how the character was written.
Platforms rarely say which models they use, and we do not know which ones ChatRoger, Candy.ai or Joi run, so we make no claims about it.
Where the characters come from: official versus community
Most apps mix two kinds of characters. Official characters are created and maintained by the platform itself. Community characters are written by other users, who fill in the persona, the backstory and the look, then share them in a public directory.
ChatRoger has both: a set of official characters plus a community directory of about 30,000 characters (we counted about 30,068 on October 2, 2026). Candy.ai shows 12 official male characters on its AI boyfriend page. Joi's gay M2M section mixes fictional Joi Originals with AI versions of real adult creators.
In practice, official characters tend to be more consistent, while community characters cover far more niches. If you know your type, browsing by tribe is faster than scrolling: start with daddies, jocks, twinks, otters or bears, and see our gay tribes glossary if a label is new to you.
AI: illustration generated with AI, not a real personDoes an AI boyfriend remember you?
A language model does not remember anything by itself between messages. What feels like memory is the app sending back parts of your past conversation, and sometimes saved notes about you, each time it asks the model for a reply. How much it keeps, and for how long, is a design choice of each platform.
ChatRoger advertises improved memory as a feature. We have not tested how well it works, how far back it reaches or whether it differs between plans, so we will not promise that your AI boyfriend will remember your birthday next month. A practical tip on any app: if a detail matters to you, mention it again now and then, and keep your conversations on one account rather than starting over on new devices or new sign-ups.
Pictures, voice notes, videos and calls
Text is generated by the language model. Media is a separate step. When you ask your AI boyfriend for a picture, the app sends a description of the character and your request to an image generator, which creates a new image on the spot. These are AI pictures, not photos of a real person (except on platforms like Joi, where some profiles are AI versions of real adult creators). Voice notes work the same way with a voice generator that reads a reply aloud in the character's voice, and short videos with a video generator.
Because media takes far more computing power than text, it is almost always what you pay for. The table below shows how ChatRoger prices each feature in credits, taken from its public upgrade page.
| Feature | How it works | Typical cost on ChatRoger |
|---|---|---|
| Text chat | A language model writes each reply in the character's voice | Free account to start; the upgrade page advertises unlimited text (free limits not measured by us) |
| Voice note | A voice generator reads a reply aloud | 10 credits |
| Photo | An image generator creates a new picture of the character on request | 30 credits |
| Short video | A video generator animates a short clip of the character | 100 credits |
| Custom companion | You define the persona, backstory and look of a new character | 100 credits |
| Audio call | Advertised live voice conversation | Cost not shown to us, not tested |
Credits and subscriptions: how you pay
AI boyfriend apps mostly charge through a subscription, packs of credits (also called tokens), or both. ChatRoger combines them. You start with a free account. Premium costs $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year and includes 1,000 credits a month, which is enough for about 33 photos, 100 voice notes or 10 videos. Extra packs of 1,000 credits cost $19.98 on the free plan and $9.99 with Premium.
Two rules from ChatRoger's FAQ are worth knowing: credits are only deducted after a successful generation, and they do not expire, even if you cancel Premium. Candy.ai bills monthly, quarterly or yearly and mentions a 7-day trial; its terms say a paid plan includes about 100 tokens a month, and it did not show us prices without an account. Joi keeps extra posts and private media behind a paid subscription whose price we did not see.

How to create your own AI boyfriend
If no existing character fits, most apps let you build one. You typically describe his personality, write a short backstory, set how he talks to you and choose his look, which the app then uses for every reply and every generated picture.
On ChatRoger, creating a companion costs 100 credits. Candy.ai advertises custom AI boyfriend creation, where you pick his look and personality. Before you spend credits, it is worth browsing all our characters: with about 30,000 community characters on ChatRoger alone, someone may already have written the man you have in mind.
- Personality: a few clear traits work better than a long list, for example protective, teasing, a bit old-fashioned.
- Backstory: where he lives, what he does, how you met. This gives the conversation something to build on.
- Look: age range, build, hair, style. This is what the image generator will use for his photos.
- Boundaries: what you want the chat to be, romantic, flirty or adult, within the platform's rules.

Age gates, adult modes and privacy basics
These apps are for adults. Candy.ai is 18+ only, with an age gate and an underage policy. Joi is adult-oriented. ChatRoger keeps its explicit content in a separate adult 18+ mode, which it calls an uncensored feed, and depending on your region it may ask for age verification through Yoti, as we saw from France. Expect the spicier side of any app to sit behind an extra check like this.
On privacy, remember the basic mechanics: your messages are processed on the platform's servers to generate replies, and they may also be sent to outside AI providers. Candy.ai's privacy notice says so directly: chats are generally private, flagged content can be reviewed, message content may go to third-party language model providers, de-identified data is used for training, and account data is kept up to 3 years after your last activity. Our guide on whether Candy.ai is safe goes through it in detail.
- Do not share your real full name, address, workplace or anything that could identify you or other people.
- Consider a separate email address for AI companion accounts.
- Read the pricing page, the terms and the privacy policy before you pay, and note how to cancel and delete your account.
- Never send real photos of yourself or anyone else that you would not want stored on someone else's server.
Quick answers
How do AI boyfriends work?
An AI boyfriend is a character (personality, backstory, look) combined with a large language model that writes each reply in his voice, using the character description and your recent conversation. Photos, voice notes and videos come from separate image, voice and video generators. No human types the replies.
Can an AI boyfriend send pictures?
Yes, on many apps. The picture is generated on request by an image model from the character's description, so it is an AI image, not a photo of a real man. On ChatRoger a photo costs 30 credits; Candy.ai advertises pictures; Joi keeps private media behind a subscription.
Can I call my AI boyfriend?
Some apps offer voice. ChatRoger sells voice notes at 10 credits each and advertises audio calls, but we did not see what a call costs and have not tried one. Check the platform's pricing page in your account before you start a call.
How do I create my own AI boyfriend?
Use the app's character creator: describe his personality, backstory, way of talking and look. On ChatRoger, creating a companion costs 100 credits. Candy.ai advertises custom AI boyfriend creation. Browsing existing community characters first can save you the cost.
Does an AI boyfriend remember me?
Only as much as the app is built to. Memory works by feeding parts of your past chats or saved notes back to the AI with each new message. ChatRoger advertises improved memory, but we have not tested how much any platform actually remembers.
