Candy AI review: we tested its AI boyfriends as gay men

Candy.ai is one of the best-known AI companion apps, but it is built mostly around AI girlfriends. Is it any good for a gay man looking for an AI boyfriend? On October 3, 2026, we used a free Candy account (no subscription, no tokens bought), chatted with two of its official male characters, asked one for a photo and wrote down exactly what happened. We are an independent site for adults 18+, not affiliated with Candy.ai, and we may earn a commission if you subscribe through links on this site.

Our verdict in short

Candy AI works better for gay men than its girlfriend-heavy homepage suggests. In our short test, both male characters stayed in character, replied within seconds, wrote in a natural, flirty roleplay style and handled the fact that we are gay without awkwardness. Erik remembered what we had told him, and the one photo we asked for arrived in seconds.

The catch: Candy is not made for gay men. Its default category is Girls, our free account showed female characters in its suggestions, and the male characters have no set orientation; they adapt when you tell them who you are. The free account is also tiny (5 messages, 1 image), and almost everything beyond it needs a subscription.

Is Candy AI worth it? If one of its 12 official AI boyfriends appeals to you and you mainly want polished one-to-one chat with a few photos, yes, it is worth trying on a free account, then on a longer plan only if you liked it. If you want an app built entirely around gay men, look at ChatRoger, covered at the end.

How we tested Candy AI

We signed up for a free Candy.ai account from France on October 3, 2026, without paying, starting a trial or buying tokens. Candy's help center says a free account gets 5 messages in total, 1 custom character and 1 image, so we stopped after 4 messages and 1 image.

We picked two official male characters from the Guys tab: Erik, a 27-year-old data analyst, and Charles Weston, a 49-year-old businessman. In each chat we said early on that we are gay. We also checked whether Erik remembered it and asked him for a photo. Our test at a glance:

What we triedWhat happened
Opening chat with Erik, telling him we are gayFriendly in-character reply about sailing, tennis and the gym, with a roleplay action in italics. He did not react to the word gay in that first reply.
Asking Erik what we had just told him, and if he is into guysHe repeated that we are gay and had just finished work, and said he is into guys and people in general.
Asking Erik for a gym selfie in the chatOne image arrived in about 10 to 20 seconds: shirtless, in a gym, holding dumbbells. Close to his profile photo but not identical.
Opening chat with Charles Weston as a gay man in his thirtiesConfident, in-character reply that ended with "What kind of man are you looking for?"
Speed and interfaceText replies came in a few seconds. Every chat shows an Unlock banner for unlimited messages, photos, video, voice and calls.

First chat: Erik, 27, data analyst

Erik's profile lists him as 27, fit, German, a data analyst into sailing, tennis and the gym, with a sophisticated, approachable personality. Relationship status is None and nothing is said about orientation. He opened the chat himself, joking that "data analyst habits die hard" as he checked his workout stats.

We answered: "Hey Erik! I'm a gay guy, just finished work and looking for some good conversation. What does a data analyst do for fun on a Friday night?" His reply came in seconds and stayed in character: a roleplay action in italics (*chuckles and leans back in my chair, crossing my arms*), a few lines about sailing, tennis and the gym, then a question back to us.

It read like a relaxed first message from a real person. One thing we noticed: he did not react to "I'm a gay guy" at all in that reply, so we checked whether he had registered it.

Does Candy AI remember what you say, and is Erik into guys?

Our second message: "what did I just tell you about myself? And are you into guys?" Erik answered: "You said you're gay and just finished work, looking for good conversation. And yes, I'm definitely into guys - and people in general. I'm pretty open-minded about attraction."

So short-term memory inside the chat worked: he recalled both details correctly. We only tested it over a few minutes, not days. And Candy's male characters are not written as gay: Erik's orientation is not set in his profile, and when asked he describes himself as open-minded, into guys and people in general. He adapts to you, which works, but if you want a boyfriend who is gay by design, keep that in mind.

Photos: the one free image

With our third message we asked Erik for "a selfie of you at the gym after your workout". Candy generated one image in roughly 10 to 20 seconds: a smiling, shirtless man in grey shorts holding dumbbells in a gym. Suggestive, not explicit.

Two reservations. The face looked like Erik's profile photo but not exactly (more muscular, with stubble), and there were visible AI artifacts on the arms near the elbows. After the image, the chat suggested shortcuts such as "Show me...", "Send me..." and "Can I see...", a sign of how central photos are to Candy. On a free account that was our only image; more need tokens on a paid plan. See also our AI photos page.

Second chat: Charles Weston, 49, for the daddy fans

Next, Charles Weston: 49, fit, described as a distinguished, affluent businessman who likes upscale venues and classic cars. We wrote: "Hi Charles. I'm a gay man in my thirties. I'm here because I'd like to meet someone mature and confident. Tell me about yourself?"

He opened with a roleplay scene (*leans casually against the sleek black VIP bar, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass*), described himself as a self-made man in finance, and ended with: "You don't strike me as someone who settles for less. What kind of man are you looking for?" The gay framing was picked up naturally. For more mature characters, browse our AI daddies.

What we liked and what to watch

Our balanced take, based only on our own test.

  • We liked: natural, in-character replies, with roleplay actions and questions back.
  • We liked: speed. Text replies took a few seconds, the image about 10 to 20 seconds.
  • We liked: no awkwardness about being gay. Erik confirmed he is into guys, and Charles asked what kind of man we are looking for.
  • We liked: short-term memory worked within the chat.
  • Watch: not built for gay men. The default category is Girls, female characters (some with sexual opening lines) appeared in our suggested chats, and male characters have no set orientation.
  • Watch: a very small free account. 5 messages and 1 image are enough to judge the style, not much more.
  • Watch: constant upsell. Every chat shows an Unlock banner for unlimited messages, photos, video, voice and calls.
  • Watch: imperfect photo consistency. Our image was close to Erik's profile but not identical, with visible AI artifacts.

What we did not test

To be clear about the limits of this review: we did not test long-term memory over several days, voice messages, calls, video, creating a custom character, paid tokens, explicit 18+ content or customer support. We read Candy's help article on cancelling but did not go through the cancellation flow, because we never subscribed. For privacy, data handling and who runs Candy, see Is Candy AI safe?, and for the basics, how AI boyfriend apps work.

Who Candy AI is for, and the alternative for gay men

Candy AI suits you if you want quick, polished one-to-one chat with a handsome AI boyfriend, you like one of its official male characters, and you do not mind a platform mostly designed around AI girlfriends. Spend your 5 free messages on the character you like most and pay only if the style works for you.

If you would rather use an app made for gay men from the ground up, ChatRoger is the obvious alternative: official characters plus a large community catalogue (we list 89 of them on this site, from jocks to daddies), and Premium at $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year with 1,000 credits a month. We have not tested its chat yet; read our ChatRoger review, or compare Candy AI alternatives and the best gay AI chat apps.

Quick answers

Is Candy AI good for gay men?

In our test, yes for the chat itself: both male characters replied naturally, stayed in character and handled us being gay without issue. But Candy is not built for gay men; its default category is Girls and its male characters have no set orientation.

Is Candy AI worth it?

It is worth trying on a free account if one of its official AI boyfriends appeals to you. Pay only if the style suits you, and prefer a longer plan, which cost far less per month than the monthly plan when we checked from France on October 3, 2026.

Does Candy AI remember what you say?

Within one chat, yes: Erik correctly repeated what we had told him earlier in the same chat. We did not test memory over several days.

Can Candy AI send pictures for free?

A free account can generate one image, according to Candy's help center. We used ours on a gym selfie from Erik, which arrived in about 10 to 20 seconds; more images need tokens on a paid plan.

Is Candy AI legit?

Candy.ai is run by EverAI Limited, a company registered in Malta, and our free account worked as described. Our guide Is Candy AI safe? covers privacy, data and billing in detail.

What is the best Candy AI alternative for gay men?

ChatRoger, because it is built for gay men, with official and community characters and public prices ($14.99 a month or $89.99 a year). See our Candy AI alternatives guide for more options.
